The resources listed below are about writing for college assignments, not just for ESL students but for any student seeking help with a written assignment. Some resources include information specifically for ESL students. The more general sites are included because they provide a wide range of helpful information, advice, exercises and interactive tools.

Advice on Academic Writing (created by Dr. Margaret Procter, Coordinator, Writing Support, University of Toronto)
A straightforward site out of The University of Toronto that presents writing and grammatical information on the college level divided into many categories. These include: Reading, Book Review & Article Critique, Writing an Annotated Bibliography, The Lab Report, Writing about History/Physics/Poetry/Art History, Style & Editing, Grammar & Punctuation for TESOL Students, and Specific Types of Writing.

Online Resources for Writers (sponsored by the Capital Community College Foundation)
An award-winning website that contains a wealth of excellent links related to writing, including the following categories: Guide to Grammar and Writing, Guide to Writing Research Papers, Recommendations for Writing Papers about Literature, Advice on Academic Writing, The Electronic Journal for Computer Writing, Rhetoric and Literature, Online Technical Writing, An Online English Grammar, Screenplay Format, Writing the Argumentative Essay, and Online Course in Analytical Writing for Science and Technology.

Paradigm Online Writing Assistant (created by Chuck Guilford)
An on-line writer’s guide and handbook for inexperienced through advanced writers. It has received many educational awards.

Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) (published by the OWL at Purdue University and Purdue University)
A huge site that is oriented towards assisting users with almost all aspects of writing. Online help for non-Purdue students is offered in terms of (1) hundreds of sets of handouts and materials and (2) downloadable workshops and presentations (PowerPoint) (3) an excellent search engine into which users can enter exactly what area they are looking for (imperfect tenses, for example) and the engine will tell them exactly what is available on the Purdue site for that request, and (4) current and many back issues of a student newsletter oriented towards writing and its vagaries.

Ohio ESL: Quotation, Paraphrase and Summary (created by the ESL Department at Ohio University)
The site is part of the university’s online umbrella ESL site for its students. Each of the main areas (Quotation, Summary, and Paraphrase) has both explanation and practice sections.

Student Academic Services Study Skills Library: Notetaking Systems (published by California Polytechnic State University)
The site focuses on five detailed systems for taking notes in class: the Cornell Method, the Outline Method, the Mapping Method, the Charting Method, and the Sentence Method. Each method is completely explained and illustrated.

Virgil (created by members of the Undergraduate Writing Center, University of Texas at Austin)
An online writing gatekeeper from the Undergraduate Writing Center at the University of Texas At Austin. In a manner similar to the automatic telephone answering programs that narrow down your inquiry to the smallest possible denominator and then send you to the correct extension, Virgil narrows down each user’s writing and grammatical inquiries so its best online materials can be accessed.

Writing@Hamilton (published by The Trustees of Hamilton College)
This is the Internet writing site for Hamilton College. The site is divided into eight major parts: Writing Tips, Habits of Effective Writers, Common Errors, Essentials of Writing, Commonly Confused Words, Punctuation Patterns, Sentence Revision, MLA Documentation and Writing Tips. Additional sections deal with Writing Prizes and Resources.

Writing Resources for English Language Learners (created by the ESL Department at Ohio University)
The site includes these major categories: Writing Activities, The Writing Process, The Mechanics of Writing, Organization and Style, Research and Writing, Writing for Special Purposes, Reference and Online Writing Centers.

Writer's Web (published by the University of Richmond)
A site organized to follow the stages in the writing process and the site contains links such as these: Getting Started, Writing First Drafts, Focusing & Connecting Ideas, and Analysis, and Argument, Peer Editing Strategies, Sentence Structure & Mechanics, Editing for Clarity & Style, Documentation and Punctuation.
