The English as a second language (ESL) resources listed below cover speaking, reading and writing.

Activities for ESL Students (published by The Internet TESL Journal)
A huge and intriguing collection of hundreds of pre-screened, online activities taken from many different sources, for ESL students of all levels and interests and their instructors. The site is published by The Internet TESL Journal, which itself is a valuable resource for teachers. (A link for the journal is found onsite.)

Dave’s ESL Cafe (created by Dave Sperling, The English Language Institute at San Diego State University)
This mega-site is the favorite of many students and their instructors. It contains approximately 3,000 links that both ESL students and their teachers might use, and is organized into more than 100 categories, including conferences, poetry, phonics, lesson plans, linguistics, grammar, writing, literacy, business English, public speaking, publishers, translation, listening, bookstores, mailing lists and many more.

Forty free online English lessons, divided into high beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The site also includes listening practice and quizzes (not linked to specific lessons), and English practice forums (message boards). It also contains many lesson plans for teachers.

ESL-lounge.com for Teachers (created by Neil Coghlan)
This massive site is almost exclusively for teachers, though very advanced students would profit from viewing it, also.

Among other resources for teachers, this site provides materials in the following areas, grouped according to level: free ESL lesson materials and ESL lesson plans, printable worksheets for ESL classroom teaching, English grammar, pronunciation, board games, ESL books, flashcards, board games, and song lyrics, ESL teacher’s forums, changing columns from guest authors about TESOL, a list of current TESOL terminology, receipt of an ESL newsletter, and lists of many TESOL materials for purchase (posters, books, DVDs, etc.).

Free, cam-based lessons from Conversa Language Centers in Cincinnati, Ohio, played on the Media Windows Player (which is a free download). Each current and new class from this Center is available both on tape and in print and is linked to points of grammar.

EnglishClub.com: English Reading for ESL learners (published by EnglishClub.com)
Written in the United Kingdom, this massive site is entirely dedicated to different aspects of reading and teaching reading for ESL students. The most important divisions of the site are: For Learners, For Teachers, For Schools, ESL Resources and ESL Software. Uses British English.

English as a Second Language (created by Rong-Chang Li)
This site is the hub of hundreds of free learning sites for ESL students and teachers in numerous areas including: listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, lesson plans, newspapers, magazines, business English, ESP, pronunciation, quizzes, idioms, methods, games and dictionaries.

Genesee Valley Writing Center (developed by Herb Shapiro, et. al.)
This online writing center offers a variety of resources which can be helpful to students who are not native speakers of English, and to their mentors. The resources include a bibliography of ESL-related articles and books, a sample learning contract for ESL composition, and several handouts and readings.

Karin’s ESL PartyLand: the Cool Way to Learn English (created by Karin M. Cintron)
A valuable site for both students and teachers. Its student pages have over 75 interactive quizzes, 15 discussion forums, interactive lessons on a variety of topics, a chat room and many other interesting links. Its teacher pages include numerous lesson plans and reproducible materials to use in class, discussion forums, ideas for communicative practice activities, a chat room, a job board, and other TESOL-oriented links.

Story Archives (published by Cable News Network, Inc., CBS Broadcasting Inc., Literacyworks and Western/Pacific LINCS)
The site contains over 50 news stories, each accompanied by RealVideo and/or RealAudio narration. Stories come in original, abridged and outline form. Many exercises to check reading comprehension (vocabulary, word selection, multiple choice, sequencing, conclusions) and practice (writing reactions) are included. The readings are categorized into content areas (i.e. politics, science and technology, education).
