FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

EMPIRE STATE COLLEGE RECEIVES ENDOWED
SCHOLARSHIP IN HONOR OF DR. JAMES A. GIBSON

(Saratoga Springs, Oct. 21, 2009) Dr. Patricia Brozinsky has established the Drs. James Aloysius Gibson and Patricia Brozinsky Endowed Scholarship at Empire State College. The scholarship memorializes the relationship between Gibson and Brozinsky, and it will be awarded annually to a graduate student in the M.A. in Social Policy program who demonstrates both academic excellence and financial need. Preference will be given to students who presently work in, or are aspiring to establish, a career in higher education.

Dr. Gibson, a psychotherapist who had a private practice, was also a graduate-level Master of Social Work professor at SUNY Stony Brook and is described as someone who celebrated people and who celebrated life. He took a sincere interest in everyone with whom he interacted, and had the ability to inspire and bring out others’ “real” self.

“Throughout his career as psychotherapist and educator, Dr. Gibson was an advocate of Empire State College’s commitment to serving adults by providing highly accessible, affordable and flexible modes of higher education,” said Evelyn Buchanan, executive director of the Empire State College Foundation. “He was a wonderful ambassador and referred many students to the college’s various degree programs. I couldn’t think of a more fitting way for Patricia to honor James’s passion for lifelong learning than by endowing a scholarship that will help future generations of adults achieve their educational goals.”

Empire State College offers motivated adults the opportunity to earn associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Through a combination of face-to-face meetings with faculty, online courses and small study groups, students can learn anytime and anywhere. They also earn credit for college-level learning from work and life. The college serves 19,000 students at 34 locations across New York state and through its Center for Distance Learning. Founded in 1971, the college has 60,000 alumni. It is the largest of SUNY’s 13 colleges of arts and sciences. Visit http://alumni.esc.edu/documents/BrozinskyProfile.pdf for more information.
