First Endowed Faculty Chair at Empire State College Announced

The Empire State College Foundation has announced the creation of the first endowed faculty chair in the college’s 36-year history. The chair is named in honor of Empire State College foundation board member Dr. Susan H. Turben, the college’s second graduate and an internationally regarded expert on families and child development.

Empire State College Ranks High on SUNY Student Opinion Survey

Empire State College, State University of New York, has been ranked number one in SUNY in more than 40 areas on the 2006 SUNY Student Opinion Survey. The SUNYwide survey, last administered in 2003, once more shows that Empire State College students are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about their college experience. More than 83 percent of Empire State College students surveyed said the college had been their first choice, and that if they had to start over, they would still choose to attend Empire State College.


Communications Workers of America President Emeritus Speaks at Empire State College Graduation

Morton Bahr, president emeritus of the Communications Workers of America (CWA), and a 1983 graduate of Empire State College, will be the keynote speaker at Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning graduation. The graduation is to be held on Sunday, November 5 at 12 o’clock noon at the Saratoga Springs City Center.

Nicola Martinez Receives Chancellor's Award for Professional Excellence

Nicola Martinez, of Saratoga Springs, director of curriculum and instructional design for Empire State College’s Center for Distance Learning, has received a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Martinez was recognized for her impact on systems and quality throughout the college’s Center for Distance Learning, and for her management and media skills with which she played a pivotal role in converting the entire curriculum to an online environment.

William Ehmann Named Executive Assistant to President

Three Empire State College Students Receive SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence
Three Empire State College students were among 270 students from 62 SUNY campuses awarded with the 2006 Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence Monday, April 10 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany. The awards are given annually to students who earn a grade point average (GPA) of 3.78 or higher and record a significant contribution to their campus or local community.

James W. Hall, Founding President of Empire State College, Receives Honorary Doctorate

Empire State College, State University of New York, will recognize its founding president, James W. Hall, with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree during an academic convocation at its annual All CollegeConference. The convocation will be held on Thursday, March 23, from 4:30 - 5:30 p.m. at the Saratoga Springs City Center. A reception will immediately follow from 5:30 to 6:30p.m. Friends of Dr. Hall and the public are invited.

Dr. Alan Leshner, the CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, is the featured speaker for Empire State College’s annual Richard H. Mattox Public Policy Lecture on Monday, March 27 at 7 p.m. His talk, “The Evolving Context for Science and Society,” will explore how the relationship between science and society is currently undergoing stress, as science and technological advancements move closer to core human and religious values like the nature of the mind or the origin of life.

Jonathan Franz Named Dean of Empire State College's Genesee Valley Center

Empire State College, State University of New York, has appointed Jonathan R. Franz as dean of its Genesee Valley Center in Rochester. The appointment is effective in April. Most recently, Dr. Franz was provost and academic vice president at Tusculum College, in Greenville, Tenn.

Carol Batker Named Associate Dean and Director of Empire State College's M.A.T. Program
Empire State College, State University of New York, has appointed Carol Batker as associate dean and director of its Master of Arts in Teaching Program, which offers an innovative model for addressing the teacher shortage in high-need schools. In this position, Batker will forge collaborations with partner schools, and continue building an exceptional faculty and implementing a complex curriculum for the program, which is in its second year.

Paul Tucci Named Assistant Vice President for Administration

Empire State College, State University of New York, has appointed Paul Tucci, of Averill Park, as assistant vice president for administration. Tucci comes to the college from the State University of New York System Administration where he was an assistant university controller. He also held a number of other administrative posts with SUNY, including assistant university auditor and interim chief business officer at Maritime College.

Verizon Communications, Corp. names Empire State College as Preferred Provider for Online Degrees

The agreement, sponsored by Council for Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL), gives Verizon’s more than 200,000 employees access to all academic areas offered by the college through its Center for Distance Learning, including associate and bachelor’s degrees in business, management and economics; technology; information systems; communications/telecommunications and business/management studies. They also may enroll on a nonmatriculated basis.

American Institute of Architects (AIA), Eastern Division, Recognizes Empire State College Buildling with Design Merit Award

The Eastern New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), has selected the renovation of Empire State College’s 111 West Avenue building in Saratoga Springs for a 2005 Design Merit Award. Noting that vacant box stores have become a blight of many communities, the award recognized the renovation for its “intriguing level of cleverness in the adaptive use and social responsibility” in turning a vacant 50,000-square-foot former Grand Union store into a working space for college offices and programs, helping to revitalize a neighborhood. The citation playfully called this “thinking inside the box.”

Dake Foundation Establishes Endowment for Community College Graduates

The Phyllis E. Dake Foundation has contributed $25,000 to create an endowed scholarship fund at Empire State College. The foundation will fund a Community College Scholars program, which awards scholarships to local community college graduates to attend the SUNY college for adult learners.
