Robert Clougherty

Acting Vice Provost for Research, Innovation and Open Education

photo of Robert Clougherty‌‌‌R. J. Clougherty, Jr. is acting vice provost for research, innovation and open education at SUNY Empire State College. He has been with the college since May 2007 when he was appointed dean of the School for Graduate Studies. Previously, he was the founding director of the Institute for Technological Scholarship and director of the Tennessee Advanced ‌Computing Technologies Institute, both at Tennessee Tech University, where he also founded and directed the Web design program. Clougherty was a tenured full professor in the English department, where he spent seven years directing the graduate programs. 

Clougherty was a Fulbright Hayes Senior Scholar at the University of Uppsala, Sweden in 1997. Both his academic writing and his poetry have been translated into multiple languages. He has published in many disciplines, including literature, engineering, chemistry, Web design and online learning. His current area of research is open education.
