Course Description:

History and Systems of Psychology is designed to provide psychology students an opportunity to reflect upon the field as a whole -- to review the subject areas that currently define the discipline, those areas that were once a part of the field but which are no longer current, and those areas that may be important in the future. Students will examine major philosophical ideas that have informed the questions and methods of psychology, including the classical systems and schools of psychology, and they will review some of the major empirical findings and theories that have influenced the direction of research. They will also be encouraged to critically examine the ways by which psychologists have written their own history and to consider how intellectual and cultural contexts may have shaped their interpretation of this history.

Note: this course has required audio tapes component. Students will choose either CD-ROM or cassettes.

Prerequisites: students should have taken a general (or introductory) psychology, plus at least one other psychology course and have senior status.

This course fully meets the General Education requirement in Western Civilization.
