A.L.L. Celebrates NY State Lifelong Learning Month
In 2006, through the efforts of Academy for Lifelong Learning (A.L.L.) Executive Director Jo-Ellen Unger, working with the staff of Assemblyman Steven Englebright, chair of the committee on aging, the NY State Assembly passed a resolution commemorating September 10 – 16 as New York State Lifelong Learning Week. New York was the first state in the nation to set aside a week honoring the thousands of senior citizens throughout the nation participating in institutes for lifelong learning and the colleges and universities that sponsor them. By so doing, the Assembly emphasized the fact that these self-driven educational organizations promoting non-credit academic and leadership opportunities to older learners not only enhance and lengthen the lives of the individuals involved, but contribute significantly to the strength of their communities, states and nation.
In celebration of New York State Lifelong Learning Week, the Academy invited the community to an A.L.L. Sampler Brown Bag Lunch. The 75 attendees enjoyed a fun-filled hour of storytelling, music and readings from original works as A.L.L. members presented an overview of the organization’s exciting program.
In 2007, 2008 and 2009 Ms. Unger again worked with legislatures to have both the Assembly and the Senate designate September of those years as New York State Lifelong Learning Months. Each year, the Academy sponsored a free special event to celebrate Lifelong Learning Month.
To celebrate New York State Lifelong Learning Month this year, A.L.L. will present a free and open-to-the-public special program featuring popular Irish storyteller Bairbre McCarthy on September 22 at 7:00 PM in the H. Dutcher Community Room of the Saratoga Springs Public Library.
