What is Article Linker?

Online Library Home > Databases and Articles > Accessing Databases > Locating Fulltext Articles

What is Article Linker?
Article Linker is a tool that helps you find the full-text of an article anywhere in the Online Library, even if it's not in the database where you are looking.

Whenever you are searching a database, and there is no full-text for an article in your results list, click the Article Linker Icon button. A new window will pop up that will do one of three things:

  1. Take you to the article, wherever it is.
  2. Tell you what database the article is in, and give you a link to that database.
  3. Tell you "Sorry, no holdings found."

How do I access Article Linker?
You do not access Article Linker on its own. When you are searching in a database, the Article Linker Icon button shows up in your search results list underneath an article that is not available in full-text in that database.

In the image below, you can see that the second search result has no Article Linker Icon button. That's because the it has PDF full-text available in the database. But beneath the first result, you can see the Article Linker Icon button.

What if I don't see any Article Linker icons or links?
Try clicking on the article title to see the complete information for that article, and there may be a link in there.

There are still a few databases that don't work with Article Linker. Westlaw Campus is one.

If the Article Linker icon appears in a citation, does that mean that the full text is available?
No, the Article Linker Icon button only indicates that Article Linker can check for that article. You will need to click the button to find out if the article is available in full-text.

When I click to get an article, sometimes I end up at the journal's home page or table of contents. Why can't I go directly to the article?
Some databases and journals permit direct linking to their articles; others do not.

If you are taken to the journal's home page, just search for the article's title (in quotation marks) or browse to the correct volume and issue number.

What do I do when I get a "bad URL," "Error 404" or some other "not found" message?
Article Linker is updated regularly, but sometimes publishers change their sites and Article Linker has not caught up with the change yet. If this happens, contact the Library at librarian@esc.edu.

I would like to comment on Article Linker or report a problem.
Use the links provided in the Article Linker page, or e-mail the Library at librarian@esc.edu.
