Jeanne Cleary 2009 Annual Crime Report
The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act is the federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, that requires colleges and universities across the United States to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. The Clery Act also requires reporting crimes in the vicinity, but not college owned or maintained by the college. (Empire State College is a nonresidential college.) Schools are required to publish an annual report every year that contains three years worth of campus crime statistics and certain security policy statements including sexual assault policies that assure basic victims’ rights, the law enforcement authority of campus police and where students should go to report crimes. The report is to be made available to all current students and employees. Prospective students and employees are to be notified of its existence and given an opportunity to request a copy. It remains the responsibility of the Office of Safety and Security for the collection of crime reports and distribution of the annual crime statistics and report by October 1 of each calendar year.
