Integrative Medicine Symposium
The annual Integrative Health Symposium sponsored by Empire State College will get under way on September 11 at the Metropolitan Center for 10 consecutive Tuesdays. The seminars emphasize preventative approaches to disease, based in Eastern medicine. Invited presenters include medical doctors and professionals in the field of occupational therapies, physical therapies and specialists in Eastern modalities. Where applicable, the presenters will include information regarding the definition and cause of the disease(s), treatment and prevention. September 11, 2007 – Holistic Nutrition – Optimizing Health
Dr. Ronald Hoffman, M.D., founder and medical director of the Hoffman Center and host of Health Talk, a nationally syndicated radio talk show, will discuss optimizing health and vitality through diet and nutritional supplements.
September 18, 2007 – Preventative Medicine – An Integrated Approach to Health
Dr. James N. Dillard, M.D., D.C., C.Ac., is assistant clinical professor at Columbia University College for Physicians and Surgeons, and clinical director of Columbia’s Rosenthal Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Dr. Dillard will explore the different modalities he uses in his practice as a physician specializing in preventative medicine.
September 25, 2007 – Holistic Dentistry
Dr. Lewis Gross, D.D.S., a graduate of Columbia University, is the director of NY Downtown Dental; a former assistant professor of oral pathology at Columbia University and consultant to the NYC Medical Examiner’s Office. Dr. Gross will discuss the practice of holistic dentistry and his use of an integrated body therapy system that combines alternative therapies such as massage, nutrition, biofeedback and acupuncture with the latest traditional technology.
October 2, 2007 – Hypnosis, Reiki, Polarity and Aromatherapy
Morrin Bass, the founder of New York Awareness Center, is a NGH board certified hypnotist and reiki master. Ms. Bass will discuss the benefits of hypnosis, reiki, polarity and aromatherapy in the treatment of stress and related physical ailments.
October 9, 2007 – Life Coaching and the Power of Positive Thinking
Mark Schwimmer is a NGH certified hypnotist, NLP master practitioner, Mythogenic SelfTM associate facilitator and high performance coach. Mr. Schwimmer will lead a discussion about the techniques used in hypnosis, performance coaching, positive thinking and their benefits.
October 16, 2007 – Integrative Oncology
Simon Yeung, research pharmacist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will lead a discussion about the hospital’s complementary and alternative medicine services, including both inpatient and outpatient services and clinical research.
Jyothi Gulibi, editorial assistant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, will discuss the information program, particularly their notable “AboutHerbs” web site, which provides unbiased information on dietary supplements.
October 23, 2007 – Feng Shui
Judith Wendell, founder of Sacred Currents and a graduate of the BTB Feng Shui Professional Training Program, has been featured in many publications including The New York Times and Elle Magazine. Ms. Wendell will discuss the art of feng shui and its effect on health.
October 30, 2007 – Acupuncture
Sifu Clayton Shiu, director of Harlem Healing Arts Wellness Center, New York state and nationally certified licensed acupuncturist, and nationally board certified Chinese herbalist, holds a B.S. in human physiology from Boston University and a M.S. in traditional Chinese medicine. Sifu Shiu will discuss the practice and benefits of acupuncture, as well as the incorporation of Chinese medicine, Tuina massage and Qi Gong.
November 6, 2007 – Veterinary Acupuncture
Dr. Tracy Akner, New York state licensed veterinarian, also is certified by the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society.
Dr. Akner will lead a discussion on alternative treatments for pets and the use of acupuncture, nutritional and herbal therapy.
November 13, 2007 – Tai Chi Chuan
Kenneth Nichols, master Tai Chi Chuan instructor in the Yang tradition and Tien Shan Pai Kung Flu black and white sash, studied Tai Chi with Makurerea El Hasan and at the Beijing Physical Education Institute in China. Nichols who has been teaching and studying Tai Chi for 24 years, will demonstrate Tai Chi and discuss its history, health benefits and applications.
Please note that due to unforeseen circumstances, beyond our control, it may be necessary to substitute topics and/or presenters.
