Students/Practitioners who have worked on a project in Theatre for Development in Lesotho, Southern Africa, will run a weekend residency in Theatre for Development, based on an ongoing project there – the Winter/Summer Institute (or WSI). Lesotho is an extremely poor, mountainous country inside the borders of South Africa with complex community health issues, including an HIV/AIDS infection rate of close to 42 percent.

The Theatre for Development Residency will build on the work of WSI in the summer of 2006, when students from Empire State College came together with students from the UK, South Africa and Lesotho, and with villagers from Lesotho’s Malealea Valley community development project. The first convening of the Winter/Summer Institute explored the complex issues of "gossip and silence" and the role of prejudice and taboo in what is and is not talked about. This idea explores the culture of silence around significant personal issues such as HIV/AIDS, family violence and other dimensions of social health, and the abundance of gossip which compromises trust.

    Residency participants will:
    • View a video documentary of the summer’s work in Lesotho. Discuss Theatre for Development and the work of the Winter/Summer Institute with Empire State College participants
    • Create – through a series of improvisations and exercises led by Empire State College's WSI participants, residency attendees – a dramatic response (their own piece of theatre) to what they have seen and learned
    • Present this performance in a public forum at the close of the residency
  • Hudson River Valley Residency: The Hudson River Valley Residency will take place April 14 and April 15, 2007 at the Roosevelt Presidential Library's Wallace Center, Hyde Park. This will be an interdisciplinary study that will focus on the history, literature, art, architecture, music, sociology, and ecology of the Hudson Valley.

This residency offers a special opportunity for students to work together in the new Henry Wallace Educational Center located at the scenic Roosevelt estate on the Hudson River. Space is limited. Students will have a choice of workshops and will attend several during the weekend. Students wishing to stay overnight will be provided with a list of nearby accommodations.

Independent follow-up studies on individual topics will be available in the summer session for 2-4 credits. For additional information, please contact Liza Alamo (914 948-6206 x3589).
