HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: OVERVIEW

This area of study draws upon many different disciplines, including psychology, human biology and anthropology, in an effort to understand human experience and behavior. You develop an understanding of the theories of human development as you explore:

  • the experience, growth and behavior of human beings
  • patterns of development in life stages – infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and aging
  • individual, group and cultural similarities and differences
  • health and mental health issues in society

Your studies will help you develop competence in research methods, observation and analysis, recording and interpreting data and examining and communicating ideas.

WHO CHOOSES HUMAN DEVELOPMENT?

Students who pursue this area of study are preparing for:

  • entry into a new field
  • graduate school in such fields as psychology and counseling, school psychology and social work advancement in their current career

WHAT CAN YOU STUDY?

Examples of concentrations include:

  • anthropology
  • child development
  • gender studies
  • gerontology
  • psychology

Please note: A psychology concentration is expected to meet the rigors of the discipline, including methodology and specific studies.
