M.A.T. APPLICATION INFORMATION

Courses Available for Nonmatriculated Students
If you are a teacher seeking professional development or a motivated adult seeking certification outside a traditional program, consider taking our online and blended courses as a nonmatriculated student.

Application Deadline
The priority application deadline is March 1st. However, applications received after the deadline will be reviewed on a space available basis.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, a candidate must:
  • be an adult learner seeking to make a career change into the teaching profession
  • have a bachelor’s or graduate degree with a major in the subject in which s/he will seek certification.
  • meet General Education requirements .
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or the equivalent.
  • demonstrate the ability to meet the academic and professional demands of the program
  • plan to teach in a high-need school that needs teachers in the student’s content specialty

Important Test Information Regarding the LAST and CST:
Passing scores on the liberal arts and sciences test (LAST) and the content specialty test (CST) are required for transitional B certification.
Applicants are also encouraged to complete these exams as soon as possible.

Certification and Degree Requirements
To qualify for the transitional B teaching certificate and enter a mentored teaching position, the student must successfully complete the first year of graduate coursework, which incorporates the introductory requirements for the transitional B certificate (including passing scores on the LAST and CST and all content and general education requirements). Additionally, the student must find full time employment for the transitional B certification application.

To earn the MAT degree, the student must successfully complete the remainder of the 42 credits for the MAT, which are integrated with two years of teaching under the transitional B certificate.

To qualify for the NYS initial teaching certificate, the candidate must complete all degree requirements including two years of successful mentored teaching under the transitional B certificate, and pass the required NYS Teacher Certification Examination written assessment of teaching skills test (ATS-W).
