Student Academic Conference Home >

    I felt really good about it. I knew it would be fun, and I was glad that the other students really expressed their appreciation for the information I gave.
    -George Ortega, 2007 Conference Presenter

    Proposals are currently being accepted for the Student Academic Conference. This conference serves as a public recognition, celebration and development of our students and their academic and intellectual achievements and pursuits. Student development workshops and activities also are offered.

    CONFERENCE GOALS
    • provide an arena for developing community among our students;
    • provide a forum for presenting creative and inspiring accomplishments of an academic nature;
    • foster the value of Empire State College as a learning community;
    • immerse students in academic culture;
    • give students and faculty an opportunity to interact in a different forum.

    CALL FOR PROPOSAL DETAILS

    Students are encouraged to submit proposals for presentations to be given during the conference. Concurrent sessions are scheduled in 40-minute blocks. Proposals for the following types of presentations will be considered:
    • individual presentation – a presentation of a piece of research or an academic project. Students are encouraged to review the work they have done for their studies for ideas.
    • panel discussion – a presentation or a discussion led by a panel of participants. Students and/or faculty who have collaborated on projects or academic work are encouraged to present in this format.
    • poster presentation – academic research or a project presented through a series of "posters" mounted on a single presentation stand. The entire presentation must not exceed four feet wide by five feet high. The presenter is expected to stand by the presentation during the designated session time frame.
    • art gallery submission – the conference schedule includes a gallery of artwork created by Empire State College students. Your application for inclusion in the gallery must include a photo of the piece(s).

    SCHOLARSHIPS

    Giving Voice: The Student Academic Conference is committed to the inclusion of multiple voices in the program. For this reason, several scholarships covering travel and lodging expenses will be awarded to students whose presentations give voice to communities marginalized by race, gender, sexuality, gender identity or class. If you would like to be considered for one of these scholarships, please submit a written statement expressing how your presentation meets the objectives of the scholarship.

    Additional scholarships are available to cover travel and/or lodging based on financial need. If you would like to be considered for one of these scholarships, please submit a written statement with your conference registration form. The written statement should include an explanation of what you hope to learn from attendance at the conference.

    Proposals will be reviewed by the Student Academic Conference Planning Committee.

    WHY PRESENT?

    Giving a presentation at a conference such as this can be an extremely rewarding activity. It can validate your academic achievements and scholarship. It can serve as a professional accomplishment listed on your resume or application for graduate school. It also can give you a well-deserved sense of personal satisfaction. Ideas for presentations can come from research papers, study group projects, internships, credit by evaluation proposals, artwork and photography. We encourage you to take the time to review your academic work, discuss your ideas with your mentors and submit a presentation proposal for this exciting event. Those students invited to present at the conference also must register (registration is free) for the conference separately.
