How to Use ARTstor

ARTstor is a database of art images, including fine art, photography, architecture, sculpture, jewels and other artifacts, ancient art and indigenous art and artisanal works.

Before You Begin

If you are unfamiliar with accessing the college's research databases or entering your college login, review How To Access Library Databases.

Access

Pay special attention to instructions on cookies, setting screen resolution and disabling "pop-up" blockers.

1. Go to the Empire State College Online Library at www.esc.edu/library
2. Click on "Multimedia."
3. Click on "ARTstor."
4. Enter your college login and password.
5. Click on "Search and Browse for Images" located on the lower left side of the ARTstor home page.

Register With ARTstor

You need to register (create an account and a password) to be able to use all of the features of ARTstor, such as saving groups of images and downloading and using the Offline Image Viewer Tool, which allows you to view images and create slideshows on your computer.

1. Follow the instructions for accessing ARTstor above.
2. Click on the "Register" button on the upper right-hand side of the page.
3. Fill in your e-mail address and enter a password.
4. Click on the "Register" button.
5. Once your registration is complete, you will receive an e-mail stating your registration was successful.
6. If you are ready to search, click on the "Login" button (located next to the help button) and enter your e-mail address and password.

Keyword Search

1. Type in words or phrases that describe the image you wish to locate. Be as specific as possible.
2. Click on "Search."
3. If your search returns more than 300 results, you will be prompted to refine your search further.

Advanced Search

This allows you to narrow your search using a variety of options.

1. Choose a collection of images to search or limit where the database will search for your keyword -- in creator, title, location, culture or other indexes.
2. Choose boolean operators (" AND" "OR" "NOT") to join terms together.
3. Click "Search."

Results List

Images in the results list are displayed as thumbnails (minature images).

• To enlarge an image, double-click on it. It will appear in a new window. (If this window does not appear, check to see if pop-up windows are being blocked on your computer.)
• Click the  button to view information about the image.
• Use the (+) to zoom in and (-) to zoom out.

Print Images

1. Follow the instructions above for viewing results.
2. Click the print icon  .

Download Images

1. Double-click on the thumbnail image to enlarge it.
2. Click the save icon to start the save process.
3. Accept the licensing agreement.
4. Select or create a folder on your computer in which to save the image.
5. Save the image.
6. Note the folder in which you saved the image.
