Dr. Shelley Dixon Named Acting Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs

Shelley Dixon, acting assistant vice president for academic affairs

Dr. Shelley Dixon has been named acting assistant vice president for academic affairs, a position left vacant when Dr. Tai Arnold accepted the role of acting dean of the School for Graduate Studies. The appointment is effective as of Aug. 13.

In her new position, Dixon will provide leadership for the Office of Academic Affairs in several key areas. She will lead the development of the college's first Academic Assessment Plan and other key "closing the loop" initiatives to better utilize academic assessment to inform the ongoing shaping and improvement of the college's academic programs. She also will provide leadership in strengthening the college's undergraduate areas of study, and will continue the work of academic program development, with a focus on the undergraduate programs of the college. Finally, she will oversee program review and accreditation for the Office of Academic Affairs.

Acting Provost Deborah Amory said, "I am thrilled that Dr. Dixon has accepted this key appointment in the Office of Academic Affairs. We will all benefit from her extensive experience at the college in a number of different roles, and in particular her ability to work across centers and programs to develop consensus on key initiatives that are important to the college as a whole."

Dixon has more than 20 years of experience in adult higher education, the last 12 of which have been with Empire State College. She started at the college in the former Office of Corporate Education (Center for Workforce Advancement), where she was first assistant director/assistant dean and later advanced to director/associate dean. She moved to the Center for Distance Learning as associate dean and director of outreach in 2004.

Dixon has broad experience with the college and in working across centers and with the central administration. She has led joint partnership initiatives with regional centers and CDL and has worked closely with the collegewide offices of enrollment management, academic review and college relations. Within CDL, Dixon is part of the senior leadership team with oversight of the budget, marketing, outreach and recruitment, partnership development and the academic advising team.

She has a B.A. in English from Wellesley College, an M.A. in organizational communication from the SUNY Albany and a Ph.D. in educational administration and policy studies, with a concentration in higher education leadership, from SUNY Albany.
