Theoretical Foundations of Nursing Practice — NUR 500
This course explores the evolution of knowledge development in nursing. Theory is analyzed as a foundation for nursing practice, research, administration and education. Students will discover strategies to facilitate the process of theory development. Course topics include nursing’s metaparadigm, philosophy of nursing, philosophy of science, nursing’s unique body of knowledge and ways of knowing. Students will synthesize what they have learned about nursing knowledge development to create a personal nursing practice framework.
Professional Role Development and Ethics — NUR 501
Students explore bioethics and integrate principles of ethical decision making and professional behaviors into leadership roles. The roles to be identified, critiqued and evaluated are clinician, advocate, educator, researcher, expert, leader, manager, innovator and consultant. Traditional ethical systems and historic perspectives are examined in light of bioethical decision making and contrasted with practice-based ethics. Students learn how to objectively and systematically make and validate bioethical decisions in the nursing and health care environment. Scope of practice legalities and advanced ethical decision making from a practice-based perspective will be introduced and discussed as it relates to various roles and leadership as a master's prepared nurse.
Nursing Research and Evidence Based Practice — NUR 502
This graduate level course will focus on the knowledge required by nurses to utilize research findings, to provide high-quality health care, initiate change and improve nursing practice. Examination, analyses and evaluation of ethical principles, current literature, research designs and methodologies including quantitative, qualitative perspectives will be discussed. The investigation of scientific inquiry, problem identification, use of theoretical frameworks, ethics, measurement, data collection and analysis and dissemination will be integrated into a research proposal based on a specific health care issue of interest.
Informatics and Healthcare Technology — NUR 503
This course covers the evolution and theoretical basis of nursing and health care informatics, including concepts of data, information, knowledge and wisdom. The course explores applications in health care informatics, the use of technology and implications for clinical practice, administration, education and research. Concepts and application of relational database technology are introduced. Interprofessional issues in health care informatics are examined. Students will develop competencies in information management for knowledge-based practice in various health care settings to enhance patient care and nursing practice.
Contemporary Issues in Health Care — NUR 504
This course explores a variety of issues facing contemporary health care professionals. The course outcomes focus on preparing the student to participate in the design and implementation of cost-effective care while managing human, fiscal and health care resources in a variety of health care systems in a time of health care reform.
Population Health, Human Diversity and Social Issues — NUR 505
This graduate course will focus on content and concepts that advance the student’s understanding and appreciation of human diversity in health and illness, and facilitate the delivery of appropriate or individualized health care. Health reform and serving the growing numbers of uninsured and underinsured people in the United States requires new approaches and measures to be taken. The advanced practice nurse faces the challenges that human diversity and social issues present when striving to provide quality preventative and primary health care. Addressing and eradicating the underlying cause of health care disparities is an ethical and social responsibility particularly relevant to the leadership role of the advanced practice nurse. Culturally competent care for everyone, especially for the more vulnerable populations, is necessary in striving toward increased health and wellness of our communities and our world.
Advanced Pathophysiology — NUR 506
This course focuses on advanced physiological and pathophysiological knowledge needed to assess acute and chronic health problems, advance critical thinking skills to understand the aims of clinical and pharmacological interventions and to support decisions for restoring and maintaining health across the life span. Recent scientific advances will be discussed with application to new approaches to disease and symptom management. Particular attention will be given to etiology, pathogenesis, developmental and environmental influences and clinical manifestations of major health problems. Interrelationships between clinical pathophysiology and basic physiology will be discussed at the genetic, cellular, organ and multi-organ systems levels, as appropriate. There is emphasis on phenomena such as genetic changes and chronic inflammation that are underlying a variety of disorders.
Advanced Pharmacological Nursing Practice — NUR 507
Building on basic knowledge of pharmacology, this course focuses on principles of drug action, pharmacokinetics and pharmacotherapeutics for common disease conditions encountered throughout the life span relative to age, race, ethnic groups and cost/benefit within the context of advanced nursing practice. Therapeutic agents are compared and contrasted for indications, efficacy, monitoring parameters, dosing principles, adverse effects and common drug interactions, taking into consideration client education needs, special population needs and cultural diversity. The legal and professional issues of prescribing, as well as the significance of keeping up-to-date using evidence-based practice are addressed. Critical thinking is applied, as the student explores the various pharmacological aspects of disease management through analysis of case studies.
Advanced Health and Physical Assessment — NUR 508
This course will build upon health assessment skills developed in the professional nurse's basic educational program. The student will develop advanced skills of physical assessment based on chief complaint rather than disease entity. The student will explore the most current evidence-based research and diagnostic testing to support diagnostic reasoning of differential diagnosis. Emphasis will be placed on theories of human development and communication and principles of epidemiology, health promotion and prevention. Critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skills are developed and integrated into the formulation of differential diagnosis through case studies, which illustrate select patients in a variety of care settings.
Curriculum and Program Development — NUR 600
Nursing curriculum and program development is a dynamic, ongoing and unified process. This process is responsive to internal and external stakeholders. Individual courses represent an integrative whole. This graduate level course provides a thorough examination of curricula history in nursing education, development and future trends. In addition, curriculum interpretations and approaches as they apply to the curriculum process and learner are addressed. Dialogue pertaining to learner diversity and issues relevant to curriculum will take place in asynchronous discussions. An in-depth review and application of educational standards and accreditation processes is provided. This course offers the student practical applications in curriculum design, including the development of a teaching/learning philosophy, mission statement, program goals, learning objectives and individual courses.
Instructional Design and Teaching with Technology — NUR 601
Instructional design and teaching with technology can be simplified to how we teach and how we learn. This graduate level course prepares students to apply theoretical concepts of education and learning to teaching in nursing. Course topics will include fundamentals of instructional design, theories of teaching and learning, instructional design models, technology use in education and learner diversity. Design considerations for technology-based instruction will be addressed in this course. This is a Web-enhanced course and learners will be able to adapt course material to a classroom setting.
Measurement, Assessment and Evaluation of Learners and Programs — NUR 602
This graduate level course addresses the purpose and application of assessment, measurement, testing and evaluation in nursing education. Quality improvements, as well as legal and ethical considerations are explored. Students also will be exposed to program assessment models, evaluation of curriculum, outcomes and teaching.
Nursing Education Capstone — NUR 609
In this online course, Nursing Education Capstone, students engage in didactic and online activities as a culminating program requirement. Together these experiences provide a framework for examining the nurse educator role and responsibilities. The student will engage in a practicum experience collaborating with nurse faculty in various aspects of the practice environment. Synthesis of curriculum, instructional and evaluative theories and knowledge is emphasized through learning activities. Focus is placed in the application of teaching and nurse educator competencies.
