Facts about the Research/Vessel Oceanic (from TMA materials)
- The Research/Vessel Oceanic (RVO) is a vessel designed by Royall L. Lowell. N.A. in 1978.
- The hull was manufactured by John Cousins, Webbers Cove Boat Yard, East Blue Hill Maine.
- The vessel was constructed by the Atlantic Boat Works, Booth Bay, Maine.
- The length is 45’ overall, the beam is 14’ and it has a draft of 4 ½’.
- It has a Detroit diesel 6-71 engine, twin disk gear 2:1, with a 26” x 26” propeller.
- It is equipped with radar, GPS units, one chart plotter, and two VHF radios.
- The vessel has a 9 knot maximum speed, and a range of about 300 miles.
- It is equipped with an H-frame and boom with a 200 lb. capacity.
- The RVO normally carries microscope, plankton nets, secchi disks, Peterson mud grab, biodredge, otter trawl, salinity hydrometers, anemometers. Dissolved oxygen and salinity meters, salinity refractometers, and chemical test kits will be used on cruises, but not kept on board.
