Understanding Digital Image Compression

mars image highly compressed

Question: You want to share an image from your digital camera with classmates. But when you try to upload your picture to the server you discover that it takes several minutes - the file is too large.

What file format should you use and how much can you compress the image without losing too much quality?

Answer: The JPEG image format is best for digital photos. Using the "high" or "95" quality level when you save the image will reduce the size of the file by about 80 percent with little or no loss of image quality.
