Software for Mathematics: Maple 10

Maple 10 Basic Operations Tutorial Series

Basic Operations Part One (13 minutes)

Basic Operations Part Two (16 minutes)

Basic Operations Part Three (16 minutes)

The intent of this series of tutorials is to help you get started with Maple 10 as quickly as possible. But meeting that goal will require that you be an active participant in your learning.

Start by considering the questions that follow. Open Maple and see if you can answer the questions for yourself. As you watch the tutorials, don't hesitate to pause the video, and go to Maple to try out the techniques being demonstrated. After watching the tutorials, come back and see if you can answer the questions you were not able to answer before. The answers are found at the bottom of the page.

Questions:

1) Use Maple to find the square root of Pi, explain why Maple returns the answer that it does. Also find the square root of 4. Explain Maple's answer to this problem.
2) In the context of using Maple, what is the difference between symbolic evaluation and numeric evaluation?
3) Describe a strategy for checking your work as you go in Maple
4) What do the terms "function" and "argument" refer to in Maple?
5) What is the "ditto" operator and why would you use it?
6) In the context of using Maple, what is a placeholder?
7) How do you enter an exponent in Maple?
8) What sorts of things are found in the Maple 10 palettes?
9) We create an execution group when we want to execute a group of commands as a unit. What is another name for a group of commands executed as a unit?
10) Why do we make the distinction between math mode and text mode when adding content to a Maple document?
11) Why do we say that Maple provides a family of "eval" commands?
12) What is the difference between assignment and testing for equivalence in Maple?
13) Why does mis-typing a variable name in Maple usually NOT result in an error?
14) Why do we sometimes need to "restart" Maple? What does restart do?
15) If I want to refer back to a previous expression using the expression label, can I just type the label into my new expression?
