Two SUNY Empire State College students are featured in a 2010 article about prior-learning assessment in The Chronicle of Higher Education. The article explores the rising importance and popularity of the process, as well as what kinds of work and life experiences are evaluated for college-level credit, and how.
Interviewed from the college was Rochester resident Shelly Stam, who earned her Bachelor's degree; and Ron Heath, who has earned both an Associate’s and a Bachelor's degree. Both students -- who are studying business and economics -- submitted extensive portfolios documenting their knowledge gained in the marketplace.
Recently, The Council for Adult & Experiential Learning reported that in a national study of 48 colleges, students who completed some form of a prior-learning assessment had higher graduation rates than other students, and completed their degrees faster.
