Changes to Nonresident Tuition-Rate Structure Effective with September 2012 Term

By Paul Tucci, vice president for administration

June 1, 2012

ESC LogoTuition charges for nonresident SUNY Empire State College students will change beginning with the September 2012 term. As a result of a change in a SUNY Board of Trustee policy regarding out-of-state rates for distance learners, all students not living in New York state or who are otherwise determined to be nonresidents will be charged out-of-state SUNY rates.

To ease the financial burden on students, the college will automatically award to any out-of-state student a grant that will reduce the tuition bill to 1.4 times the rate for New York state residents. This arrangement will result in a reduction of tuition costs for current nonresidents who enroll through a regional learning center. For example, someone who resides in New Jersey, works in New York City and studies at the college’s Metropolitan Center will be paying less in tuition beginning in September.

Those enrolled at the college through the Center for Distance Learning, however, will experience an increase in costs.

This applies to all nonresident students – both undergraduate and graduate – with the exception of students who are active-duty military, veterans and some who are military spouses. Information about residency requirements can be found at www.esc.edu/nysresidency.

Note: A new $300 increase in tuition is anticipated for September 2012 that is part of the plan approved by the state Legislature for a rational tuition program through 2015-16 for SUNY. That increase is not reflected in the numbers below. As always, tuition and fees are subject to change by the SUNY Board of Trustees.
