Assessment and the Admissions Process at Empire State University

Students who have applied for admission to the university and have been referred for further review of their writing skills must complete a Secondary Assessment. You have been identified to complete this assessment, which means that you need to do additional assessments before an admission decision can be made. In addition, if you are admitted, assessment results will be used by the Office of Academic Support to assist you with your academic work at the university.

What Happens Next

Step 1

The Office of Academic Support will email you with directions for the assessment process. The email will contain important information such as a contact name for the person coordinating your assessment process, and depending on your required assessments, it may also have website links and log-in information.

If you do not receive the email within one week of being notified by admissions that you have been referred for the secondary assessment or are unable to locate the email with your assessment contact name, please email Learning.Support@sunyempire.edu . Be sure to include your name and student ID number. Your student ID number is located on the secondary assessment email you received from Admissions.

Step 2

Once you receive the instructions for the process, you should complete the assessment(s) within one month. Admissions will not be able to make a decision on your application until this process is complete.  If you are unable to complete the assessments during that time, please notify your assessment contact as soon as possible.

Step 3

Once you have completed your assessment(s), your results will be reviewed along with your application essay and any academic history you have provided as part of your application. Your assessment contact will then forward your results to the Admissions office to be considered as part of your final application packet.

Step 4

The Admissions Office will email you with the final decision regarding your admission status.

Possible Admission Decisions

Here are the possible results and options resulting from your assessment:

  • Admitted to the university

Your assessment results indicate you are ready for college- level work and you are accepted to the university without any required academic support. Additional academic support resources, services and/or programs may be recommended by your Director of Academic Support.

  • Admitted to the university - academic support and skills development required

You are accepted to the university but your assessment results indicate that you would benefit from structured academic support in your first term.

You are required to participate in Preparing for College Writing, a noncredit, 15-week, writing intensive activity that will assist you to further develop your academic writing and reading skills.

  • Admission application is declined

Your assessment results indicate a need for significant academic skills development that is not available through existing university resources or services. Your assessment results, in conjunction with material provided in your admission application, would lead to your admission application being declined, with a referral to a local community college to improve your writing/reading skills.
