About the Credential As You Go
The current credentialing system in the U.S. only formally recognizes learning contained within a degree; yet, 36 million Americans have some college and no degree and go unrecognized for the learning that they have acquired. Learning not sealed within a credential is often not valued and remains as undocumented learning, reducing employment opportunities especially for minority and low-income students. With the COVID-19 pandemic, even more students have stepped away from higher education for economic reasons and inequities have become even more evident. Through a Lumina Foundation grant, the Credential As You Go (CAYG) initiative is rethinking the credentialing model in the United States and examining how students could gain credentials as they move through higher education, rather than only in the current four-tiered degree system.
