Continuing Teacher and Leader Education

In 2016, the New York State Board of Regents approved new regulations that require those with professional classroom teaching, educational leadership, or Level III teaching assistant certificates to complete 100 hours of professional development that is offered by an approved Continuing Teacher and Leader Education (CTLE) provider. CTLE approved professional development includes both credit-bearing and non-college credit bearing trainings. For more detailed information about CTLE, please visit the New York State Education Department website.

CTLE at Empire State University

SUNY Empire is an approved CTLE provider and currently offers course sections at the undergraduate level that have been reviewed and approved for CTLE credit. CTLE approved course sections being offered in a given term can be found in the college's Term Guide by selecting "Continuing Teacher & Leader Ed" under the "Attribute" field.

CTLE Certificates

The Registrar’s Office will supply a CTLE certificate to a student who has successfully completed a course section approved for CTLE credit. Once a final grade is posted, please email the Registrar’s Office at RegistrarsOffice@esc.edu to request the certificate (or to order a misplaced certificate). Be sure to include your full name, the course title, course number, section and the term in which it was completed in your request.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Do I Register?

For current matriculated students, registering for a CTLE approved course section is the same as registering for any other course. Students should check with their mentors to ensure any course they take applies to their degree program. Individuals who are not currently matriculated students may register for CTLE approved course sections that are open to nondegree seeking students by submitting an application for nondegree study.

Am I Eligible?

For information on CTLE applicability, individuals should consult the New York State Education Department webpage on registration and CTLE requirements.

Can Non-educators Take CTLE Approved Course Sections?

Yes, anyone can register for a CTLE granting course section. CTLE credit is an added benefit for covered professionals. Other than granting CTLE credit, CTLE approved course sections are the same as all other SUNY Empire courses.

How Do I Know if a Course Offered by SUNY Empire Grants CTLE Credit?

CTLE credits are granted at the section level. All CTLE granting sections will have the attribute of "Continuing Teacher & Leader Ed" identified in the Term Guide. CTLE approved sections offered in a given term can be found in the university’s Term Guide by selecting “Continuing Teacher & Leader Ed” in the “Attribute” search field.
