Course Sequence and Residency Requirements

The MAT in Special Education is designed as a three-year program. Blended coursework may require face-to-face meetings at the Syracuse or Manhattan program locations, or synchronous technology-aided meetings from a distance. In addition, 100 hours of field experience, or observations, are required throughout the first two years. The third year of the program culminates in a two-semester Residency placement in a middle or high school setting in the Syracuse or NY Metropolitan area.

The Residency placement begins in late August and concludes in mid-May of the third year. As the school year progresses, residents incrementally assume more responsibility for the classroom, building to an immersion and lead instructional responsibility for the critic teacher’s classes for eight weeks during the spring term. During the residency, students complete an additional 6 credits of relevant course work that links theory to classroom practice, while receiving intensive mentoring by faculty members and supervisors.

The program concludes with the Special Education Masters Capstone Project.  In addition to completing the 45-credit program, students must pass the NYS certification exams (SWD CST, Multi-Subject 7-12 CST, EAS, and edTPA) in order to qualify for Initial certification.
