Persistent shifts in hiring demand and the future of work have accelerated in recent times. Immigrant and refugee communities have been disproportionately affected by job losses, and make up a larger percentage of essential workers in healthcare and retail. Adult education programs are critical to building an inclusive and equitable recovery through English language, digital literacy, career pathway and academic transition programs. Within this session we will workshop a blended program design to optimize employment outcomes for ELLs.

Career Pathway (IET) and localized, adaptable workplace English programs can make a critical difference in how successful and impactful these programs can be at opening up internal career pathways and talent pipelines. But "selling" programs to employers and upskilling partners can be challenging. How do you gauge employer readiness and how do you convince them of the value in partnering with adult education programs? And once you have their buy-in and launch a new program, how do you measure impact and Return on Investment (ROI)?

Insight into how blended and virtual IET programs support English language learners as they pursue career pathways and advancement in healthcare, technology, retail, hospitality, manufacturing and many other growth sectors will be discussed. The "jobs of the future" are already here, so let's explore how you can rapidly prepare your learners for success and workplace satisfaction over the long-term.

Fake news isn't new, (John Adams used fake news in 1769 to undermine the British), but fake news is currently an online epidemic. In this interactive nearpod presentation, you'll be shown tools that you can use with your students to help them tell the difference between fake news and legitimate news. Please use a laptop or tablet for this presentation.

The importance of educators in the lives and well-being of today's world has never been more evident. With all the demands of the day-to-day responsibilities, many educators are left feeling burnt out and empty. Is there a solution? Yes. It starts with a perspective shift. Through the presenter's powerful encounter with a grade school teacher, little did that teacher know, they would be making an impact on multiple generations 25+ years later. As the story of this encounter unfolds, this inspirational, powerful presentation will help revive the energy, purpose, and meaning among attendees. Additionally, attendees will walk away with a three-part process for creating stronger connections among leaders and employees, teachers, and students.

In two, asynchronous, introductory US history survey courses, a free curation tool, Wakelet, is used as a tool for artifact storage and content creation for a major course-long project as an alternative to a traditional research paper. Students compile primary and secondary sources and images related to their research topic and then create lessons and presentations to post to their Wakelet for others. The process of locating information, organizing and evaluating it, and creating new content allows students to apply historical thinking, contextualize the past, and learn through the process of teaching.

The capstone for the bachelors in liberal arts uses Wakelet as a creative tool for a collection of professional reflection journals and a final electronic portfolio. Using Wakelet as the tool for completing these allows students the flexibility to be more creative in how they demonstrate professional presence, and gives them a chance to showcase different strengths and even experiment with something besides text-based reflections.

This presentation will address the benefits and challenges of using Wakelet and address key takeaways for audience members hoping to employ the tool in their own courses.

Over the past twenty years, the scholarship of writing instruction has undergone a significant paradigm shift. As scholars rethink writing instruction to address these challenges, they have identified a variety of strategies, which we (borrowing from the language of economics) have placed into two categories: supply and demand.  On the supply side, there are strategies for reforming introductory writing classes to better equip students for the variety of writing challenges they will later encounter. On the demand side, there are strategies for activating students' pre-existing writing knowledge and skills in the disciplinary classes they will take in their major or degree field.

In this presentation, we will briefly discuss the scholarship informing course and curricular changes at our nonprofit online college. We will then examine the ways in which we have adopted best practices from both the supply and demand sides of the writing equation to re-imagine our introductory online writing courses, expand our online writing support services, and develop a new Writing in the Disciplines initiative. We will place special emphasis on the ways in which we have leveraged online teaching and learning technologies to support and implement each of these projects. Finally, we will share resources that can support attendees in implementing WID initiatives at their own institutions.

If 2021 taught us anything, it's that it's not about the tools driving our instruction. Join us as we reflect on the best of 2020-2021 and, more importantly, what we take into the new school year. Instructional practices that amplify student engagement as well as how we assess learning will be explored.
