Session 3

Session 3 | Presentations | 11:30am

Michele Haiken - Manhattanville College/ Rye Middle School

Our job as teachers is to inspire and lead our students to success. Playlists, choice boards, and hyperdocs are part of the blended learning model that help create active student learner opportunities. We can use our playlists and hyperdocs like Peloton instructors to personalize, connect, and embrace our community members - our students.

As teachers we are committed to our students, building a safe classroom community where students come back because they are engaged, empowered, and inspired. Like Peloton, we can create opportunities for our students to discover their true potential through the power of playlists and blended learning opportunities.

Students grow up with powerful technologies to access, share, copy, generate, and collaborate on creative work in new and evolving ways. They consume online media, but also create, publish, distribute, and critique. In this rich environment, students must interact with creative work ethically and legally. Whether they know it or not, copyright and fair use are directly relevant to these activities. Through our FREE unbiased curriculum that focuses positively on creating and sharing, attendees will reinforce their own copyright knowledge, get answers to situations in education, and participate in student lesson activities. Our state ambassadors who are current teacher-librarians will share their experiences using C&C's FREE K-12 resources including lessons, slides, videos, infographics and much more.

Give your students an authentic audience for their work. Instead of just submitting projects or essays to their teachers, student work can be published for a global audience. As students demonstrate what they have learned with culminating activities or written reports, you can publish their work for others to see. This encourages students to submit better projects - research, revise, fact check, edit, collaborate. It also allows for addressing a different skill - writing for different audiences. Plus, when student work is published on a site that reaches a global audience, students will learn about other states and other countries as they see projects other schools have done. Teachers can also publish lessons they teach for a global audience of other educators. Educators can use the site as a resource to find lessons done by other schools, to customize, or use "as is." The presentation will focus on a specific website you can use or join. Sample projects from the site will be shown, giving ideas you can replicate. The site also has a page of free resources for both teachers and students to use. Note: The presenter will do a separate session on how to create a sample project using Google Maps.

Conversation is a constant in our lives, but we often don't have enough meaningful conversations, even among the people with whom we interact every day. Listening leads to understanding. Understanding leads to the capability to support.

People, especially students, find themselves battling the odds day in and day out. Many are faced with mountains of adversity and left to fend for themselves. What these people are looking for is someone to have confidence in them. They are looking for support and someone who cares. People can have mass amounts of power with how supportive they are and how much they care.

Educational institutions have seen a significant shift from in-person instruction to online learning settings due to the coronavirus pandemic. Teachers and instructors have been asked to quickly adjust their methods, pivoting from traditional classroom activities to those that can be completed in a virtual space.

ed2go, a Cengage company, has been providing quality online continuing education experiences since 1997. Recognizing that educators could use an agile resource when building peer review course content and assessments, our learning designers have developed an Online Peer Review Kit. In this session, Jeanine and Amanda will walk participants through the content of the kit and demonstrate how the content has been used within ed2go courses. Strategies for both synchronous and asynchronous online learning formats are provided. The resource will be provided to participants for free through the OER Commons.

Data is wonderful to collect, but sometimes we have trouble laying it out in a manner we can visually understand. This is where Google Data Studio (and some Google Forms and/or Google Sheets knowledge) can be helpful! Whether it's building a chart, populating a graph, or displaying individual numbers, you can visualize your data in a way that can be useful for a report, meeting, or classroom/school information.

Virtual Worlds have been available for several decades and now more opportunities are coming forward for both viewer-based (downloaded app for enhanced graphics) and web-based interactions. These environments can provide networked immersive, shared experience that can be joined through a computer, phone, or 3-d headset, depending upon the application and design. This session will demonstrate virtual world settings and experiences that have been developed and used across several platforms from viewer to web-based, illustrating the types of activities that are possible. Examples will be shared and approaches to incorporating these immersive virtual environments into K-12, higher education, corporate and business will be considered.  In a global world needing to interact and work together at a distance new communities are emerging. Gain ideas, examples, and startup resources to consider your own development.
