February 14, 2017

SUNY Empire State College will be closed Monday, February 20 in observance of Presidents’ Day. The IT Service Desk will maintain normal hours of operation on Saturday, February 18 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday, Feb.  19 from 1 to 9 p.m., but will be closed Monday. The college library will also maintain normal hours of operation on Sunday, Feb.  19 from 1 to 9 p.m.  and be closed Monday.  Outside the library’s normal hours, and all day Monday, the library’s  “Ask Us 24/7” chat will be available for student research questions.  Offices in Saratoga Springs will reopen on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Please refer to for answers to our students’ most commonly asked questions.

Registration and Call for Proposals for the fifth annual Student Wellness Retreat is now open!  Registration, meals, attendance at all workshops, and entertainment is free! We will have over 40 workshops of sessions planned with the goal to increase your physical, emotional, and mental health well-being. Due to an overwhelming demand, travel grant requests are now closed.

This year's keynote speaker is Tamika Catchings, the opening speaker will be Dr. Michael Fowlin, and entertainer and comedian Greg Bennick will all be featured during the conference. We hope to see you there!

Following the suggestions of a number of our students, a Yammer discussion forum is now available for students to engage in open, respectful discussion around current social and political challenges.

Periodically, site moderators Patricia Myers, the college’s director of the Office of Collegewide Student Affairs and Elliott Dawes, chief diversity officer for institutional equity and inclusion, will post prompts to encourage discussion on issues of societal concern.

Information Technology Services (ITS) has completed the Moodlerooms 3.1.4 upgrade. New features include:

  • Improved Quiz Navigation:  You can now navigate forward and backward through your quiz attempt when reviewing prior to submitting your quiz. Moodlerooms has added a Previous Page button and a Next Page button to help navigate through your quiz attempt. 
  • PDF Feedback Files from your Instructor:  Your instructor can now provide an annotated PDF feedback file as part of the grading process for assignment activities.  When grading an assignment, your submitted file automatically converts to a pdf for your instructor to add notations, comments and highlights as part of their grading feedback.  If the instructor chooses to use this feature, you will see the PDF file in the assignment activity area where you originally uploaded your assignment and where you usually view your grades, feedback comments and feedback files in the past.

The payment due date for the Spring 2 2017 term is March 3.  Registrations not paid for by this date will be cancelled. If you are on the time payment plan, your first 1/3 down payment is due by March 3.

NYS Department of Civil Service is offering the Professional Career Opportunities (PCO) examination on Saturday, April 8. This exam fills more than 100 entry-level professional titles used by various state agencies across New York. The deadline to apply for taking the exam is Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2017. SUNY Empire State College is excited to announce registration and call for proposals will open for the fifth annual Student Wellness Retreat on Tuesday, January 17th. Please visit the Student Wellness Retreat website to register; also keep in mind that travel grants are limited. 

Our keynote speaker this year is Tamika Catchings who is a four-time Olympic gold medalist, nine-time WNBA All-star, NCAA Champion, president of the WNBA Players Association and a New York Times best-selling author. 

The dates of the retreat are April 6-8 at the Hilton in downtown Albany. We hope to see you there!

If you register for the Spring 1 2017 term on or before Jan. 6, 2017, the payment due date is Jan. 6, 2017.   You may view your student account statement online. Enrollments not paid in full, or through approved financial aid, sponsorship or enrollment in the time payment plan will be cancelled after the payment due date.

Kick Start Your 2017 New Year’s Resolution! Join the SUNY Empire State College 13-week-long Movement Campaign for Charity. The challenge starts Jan. 1 and ends April 1. 

How to Get Started:

  1. Download the free Charity Miles app at
  2. Log into Charity Miles, and search for your team, #SUNYEmpire, in the search bar.
  3. Join the team, and then select the charity of your choice
  4. Select your form of workout – outdoor walk/run, indoor walk/run or outdoor bike.
  5. Get moving! Make sure your workout is being tracked.

Effective 6/16/16, Higher One Inc. was acquired by Customers Bank. As part of this acquisition, Higher One's disbursement functions will now take place under BankMobile Disbursements, a division of Customers Bank. The college has begun providing students with Microsoft Office 365. As of July 20, 2016, all students enrolled in the Summer 2 term and June mini sessions will have their own college email address and the entire suite of cloud-based Microsoft Office 365 (O365) products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive and Skype for Business. All other students will have access to the suite of products as of the first day of the term for which they are enrolled. Please see the article in ITS News for complete details on when you can expect to receive it and what to do in preparation.

Students planning to attend May 16, 2016 and after should complete the 2016-2017 FAFSA online at listing school code 010286 in order for federal aid eligibility to be determined. Federal financial aid for the Summer 2016, Fall 2016, and Spring 2017 terms will begin to be processed by the Financial Aid office beginning February 22, 2016.
