Troy A. Jones, Associate Professor and Mentor in Educational Studies has Died

Troy A. Jones, an associate professor and mentor in Educational Studies, has died. Jones first joined SUNY Empire in 2012 and was based at college's Staten Island location.

He taught statistics, educational studies and children's literature, including courses on social science statistics and writing instruction for elementary school students.

“Troy was remarkable, not only for his mastery of a broad spectrum of academic disciplines, but also for his outstanding skills as a teacher and his commitment to integrating his work as a scholar and practitioner into the primary schools in New York City,” said Officer in Charge Mitchell Nesler. “Troy had a playful spirit and his passion for teaching and for our students came across every time I interacted with him over the years. I am very sorry for the loss to his family and the New York City and college communities he served so well.”

Frank Vander Valk, interim dean of SUNY Empire Online and associate dean, division of social and behavioral sciences, said, “Troy was consistently upbeat and steadfastly dedicated to his students. We will miss his boundless enthusiasm and joyful laughter. This is a great loss to Staten Island and the whole college.”

Jones died Nov. 1, 2018 and his obituary is available online.

His family has encouraged members of the college community to sign the online guest book.

Services will begin at 11 a.m., Wednesday. Nov. 14, at the First Baptist Church of Glenarden, 3600 Brightseat Road, Landover, Md. 20785.

The service is planned as a day-long event at the church, including a brief viewing, the service, burial, then repast, according to Jones' family. Flowers are welcome at the church.
