EMPIRE STATE UNIVERSITY ANNOUNCES LAUNCH OF NEW DIGITAL COMMUNICATION PROGRAM

(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – December 11, 2023) Empire State University will launch a bachelor’s degree in digital communication to prepare students for careers in digital journalism, social media, marketing, creative arts, and emerging digital media professions. Students can enroll in the digital communication program at SUNY Empire beginning fall of 2024. 

The bachelor’s degree program is taught fully online, accommodating full-time and part-time study, as well as transfer students. Employing the “learner as producer” model, students will learn by doing while receiving personalized support and guidance from mentors and faculty with expertise in the field. The duration of the degree program will vary depending on individual course load and prior credits. 

The fully online Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication features a cutting-edge curriculum offering courses such as:  

  • Digital communication, cultures & careers
  • Media and visual literacy
  • Social media: communication & culture
  • Digital communication strategies I and II
  • Data visualization

SUNY Empire’s digital communication program comes as a result of the rise of digital consumption by the emerging generation of digital natives. According to a study on digital skills for career progress, the number of jobs requiring digital skills is predicted to increase 12% by 2024. This future-focused program prepares students for careers that are in demand now and in the years to come. 

Professor of Digital Communication and Media Studies in the School of Arts and Humanities Cindy Conaway, Ph.D. said, “We are excited to launch this program. It will help students who already work or wish to work in the world of online and digital communication as journalists, marketers, creatives, influencers, or academics. It’s the only program of its kind in SUNY, and is ideal for students transferring from previous study or work backgrounds in communication, journalism, media studies, writing, marketing, creative arts, and more and allows for prior learning credits for previous work or internship credit. They’ll have the opportunity to do innovative hands-on projects while thinking about how digital communication influences culture in the US and globally.” 

Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities Nicola Allain, Ph.D. said, “We are excited to launch of our Bachelor of Science in Digital Communication, a pioneering program in the digital humanities designed to empower the next generation of digital communicators with a unique blend of humanities competencies and digital media skills. Our curriculum combines the technical aspects of digital communication with an emphasis on critical thinking, creativity, ethical reasoning, adaptability, flexibility, and lifelong learning. We're preparing students to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital landscape with disruptive technologies and changing expectations."
