Empire State University Faculty and Staff Unveil New Version of Popular Coursera Class

(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - October 31, 2023) Interim Director of Learning Design and Solutions Alena Rodick and Professor Valeri Chukhlomin announced a major revision of their course, “Strategic Self-Marketing and Personal Branding” on Coursera, the online learning platform.

This is one of four courses in the Career Self-Management Training and Certification specialization, developed in 2016 by a team of SUNY Empire faculty and professionals led by Chukhlomin. The specialization aims to help adult learners and working professionals use proven business strategy methods and tools to develop their careers in competitive job markets. In the first seven years after its launch, more than 116,000 learners from over 200 countries enrolled in the specialization's courses.

In 2023, the specialization was renamed from "Career Brand Management" to "Career Self-Management Training and Certification" to reflect its focus on career self-management, a central construct in recent career-development literature.

“All skill-building activities are centered on developing career self-management competence, which includes personal strategy skills, growth mindset, adaptability, resilience, skill-building capabilities, self-monitoring, self-programming, self-promotion, and other related skills,” Chukhlomin said.

The original course has enrolled 45,497 students since its inception. 440 learners are already registered for the updated course, which includes generative artificial intelligence — a forward-thinking tool for skills assessment, self-assessment, and development.

“By learning about Generative AI, learners will be at the forefront of their profession and ready to embrace and navigate the rapidly evolving world of AI in skills management,” said Chukhlomin.
