(SARATOGA SPRING, NY) A May 4, 2023, article in Inside Higher Ed featured, “Solving the Credit-for-Prior Learning Equity Paradox” by Michelle Navarre Cleary, an educator focused on adult learners’ success. The essay takes up many PLA-related issues about “equity” with which Empire State University has been grappling. Cleary’s essay also includes three mentions of SUNY Empire.

First, it notes the university’s publication, Prior Learning Assessment Inside Out (PLAIO): An International Journal on Theory, Research and Practice in Prior Learning Assessment.

Second, Cleary refers to an essay by faculty colleagues Frances Boyce and Cathy Leaker (Leaker is now at Everett Community College in Washington State), “A Bigger Rock, a Steeper Hill: PLA, Race, and the Color of Learning.”

And third, the essay mentions an essay by our SUNY Empire colleague Nan Travers, “What is Next After 40 Years? Part I: Prior Learning Assessment: 1970-2011.”

SUNY Empire continues to be engaged in and is often at the forefront of national and even international discussions about PLA policies and practices.
