(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY – September 18, 2023) Empire State University will accept credit recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE) for certain courses offered through Coursera, an online learning platform. In partnership with Coursera and the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL), a new degree pathway has been made available to allow individuals in the NYSDOL program to apply eligible Coursera learning to any of SUNY Empire’s 125 bachelor’s and associate degree programs. Learners in this pathway can receive up to 18 credits to transfer into an Empire State University degree program, saving time and money.

“We’re proud to partner with SUNY Empire and NYSDOL to give New Yorkers multiple pathways to gain the knowledge, skills, and credentials they need to advance their education, enter new careers, and unlock economic opportunity,” said Chief Content Officer at Coursera Marni Baker-Stein.

During the spring of 2020, New York State recorded its highest unemployment rate to date as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. To help unemployed workers reskill for changing industry demands, NYSDOL provided free access to training on Coursera, granting access to certificates and credits from top companies such as Goodle, IBM, and Salesforce that can now be counted as credits toward a degree.

“SUNY Empire is excited to partner with Coursera and the NYS Department of Labor. This initiative will further advance our commitment to access, degree completion and workforce development,” Vice President for Enrollment Management and Marketing Andrea Hennessy said. “As the New York state workforce continues to shift post-pandemic, SUNY Empire remains agile and ready to meet the higher educational needs presented in an ever-changing economy.”
