(SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY -- July 19, 2023) Empire State University's Front-End Web Developer Oleh Kyrylenko originally hails from Ukraine. Initially working as a web content developer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he recently relocated to Saratoga Springs, New York this past March.

At SUNY Empire, Kyrylenko plays a crucial role in supporting the university's website by interpreting designs and implementing code to create engaging and modern web content. Additionally, he is responsible for diagnosing and resolving any issues that may arise, ensuring the smooth functioning of SUNY Empire's webpages.

Prior to his work as a web developer, Kyrylenko was a professional soccer player in Europe. At seven years old, he was selected to join Dynamo Kyiv, a prestigious soccer club that handpicked the most talented players from across the country, offering Kyrylenko the ability to train, learn, and reside alongside other talented athletes. At 17, he signed his first professional contract with Central Sports Club of the Army (CSCA) Kyiv, and eventually represented Ukraine, playing professionally in Spain and Austria.

“Over the course of nearly eight years, I devoted my skills and passion to this club, further expanding my horizons and experiences,” he said.

It was during his time as a soccer player that Kyrylenko discovered his interest in web development, influenced by his friends who worked in software development. “Whenever we gathered, our conversations naturally gravitated toward discussing various aspects of software development,” he said. “It's fair to say that they influenced me and sparked my initial curiosity.”

It didn't take long for Kyrylenko to realize that web development was not just a hobby, and he took it upon himself to self-learn coding and software development in his spare time. Soon after, he pursued a professional career as a web developer in Ukraine and Austria.

Though retired from professional soccer, Kyrylenko maintains an active lifestyle by prioritizing his cardio workouts. “After a long day at work, I lace up my running shoes and run about five miles each day,” he said. “It serves as more than just a means to maintain physical fitness, it is an opportunity for me to unwind and think.” This upcoming fall, Kyrylenko will serve as a coach at the Saratoga Springs Wilton soccer club.

Shortly after joining SUNY Empire, Kyrylenko received a heartfelt handwritten letter from President Vollendorf, filled with encouraging words of support amid the ongoing hardships in his home country. "It was an incredibly touching gesture, and I really believe that she will make a significant impact at this university," he said.

As Kyrylenko embraces his role at SUNY Empire, he finds a true sense of belonging and support in his new home. "I have developed a deep affection for the city of Saratoga Springs," he shared. "The unwavering support for Ukraine within the city is truly remarkable and evident by the numerous Ukrainian flags proudly displayed on houses and cars."

Kyrylenko expresses his gratitude for the safety and support that both the United States and SUNY Empire have provided him. He looks forward to the day when he can reunite with friends and family in Ukraine, once it is safe to do so again.

He hopes to fully immerse himself in web development and share his knowledge to one day help revitalize Ukraine. “This is my way of helping to rebuild my country when the war is over,” he said.
