Graduation Procedure Information

The student’s local regional/program academic review office conducts a graduation review when the student has satisfied all requirements for the degree:

  • The student has a concurred degree program (the degree program and portfolio have been approved by the center assessment committee and by the Office of the Registrar).
  • All Empire State College studies for the degree have been completed.

If all is in order, the assessment office forwards a recommendation for graduation that triggers the following centralized reviews:

  • ACADEMIC CLEARANCE: The Office of the Registrar reviews the student academic records, ascertaining that studies described in the evaluations are the same as those in the degree program and that all degree requirements are met.
  • FINANCIAL CLEARANCE: Student Accounts reviews the student’s financial status, ascertaining there is no balance due.

Graduation processing time varies and can take anywhere from six to eight weeks in peak processing times. When both the academic and financial clearances have been completed, the Office of the Registrar assigns an official graduation date, the first day of the following month. The remainder of the processing, which includes ordering and processing your diploma, takes approximately three weeks.
