Thinking of making a career change? Here are 4 tips for success.

You’ve probably heard the term, “The Great Resignation” at some point this year. That’s because many people are looking to change careers due to low-paying jobs, lack of advancement opportunities, not loving what they do, or feeling excited about another path. Sound like you? 

Whether you’re new to the workforce or you’re a seasoned professional, it’s never too early or too late to find a career that fits your goals and interests. A career change can be a life-changing decision, so you want to make sure you do it right.

Here are four tips for successfully changing your career path.

    1. Do your research and prep work.

Research the job, skill, and education requirements of your desired career path. O*Net is a great online resource for this type of research. You can learn information about prospective employers and their job opportunities and requirements.     2. Take what you’ve learned and apply it to your new career.

Many employers value professional experience regardless of what field you’re in. Skills you’ve gained in one role often can transfer to another role. Make sure you take the time to prepare a solid application that includes metrics on your previous work experience. You may be more qualified than you think. Don’t hide what you already know.

    3. Network, network, network!

You’ll want to make as many connections as you can within the industry you’re planning to move into. LinkedIn is a great networking tool. Start with people and colleagues you know, tap into their connections, and speak with them about their jobs. Join professional organizations and attend their networking events.     4. Be persistent.

If you don’t get your dream job right away, that’s okay. Take feedback from recruiters and industry professionals to advance your skills and knowledge.
