Mental Health First Aid

SUNY Empire State College is dedicated to reducing mental health stigma in both our college community and the communities our students live. One way we combat mental health stigma is by giving our students the tools to help people facing a mental health or substance use challenge.

Mental Health First Aid, presented by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing, is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders in adults. The training gives you the skills to reach out and provide initial help and support.

The course requires an attendee to complete a two-hour online module before attending an eight-hour instructor-led session. All instructor-led sessions will be hosted via Zoom. Most importantly, all pre-work and instructor-led trainings must be completed to receive a certificate.

There is no cost to students, faculty, and staff of SUNY Empire State College to participate in this training. Funding was set aside from the Higher Education Emergency Relief (HEERF) to support these mental health projects and initiatives.

Class sizes are limited to 30 attendees. If an instructor-led session meets capacity, a waiting list will be created. You will be notified of your waiting list status and your number on the waiting list.

If you have questions about the course, please email the Health and Wellness Program.

SUNY Empire will host one instructor-led session a month throughout the 2022-2023 academic year. The instructor-led sessions will be hosted on the following dates and times:
