The Office of the Registrar’s Top 3 Reasons for Registering Early

By Amanda Lagoe, Assistant Registrar

It’s that time again! Registration for the Summer 2022 term will begin on February 8. Are you ready?

Registering for classes can be stressful. Which classes should you take? Will you be able to get a seat? What if the course isn’t offered? Will your registration be canceled for non-payment? The Office of the Registrar wants you to know that registration doesn’t have to be a stressful experience. What’s the trick? Register for your classes early!

The Office of the Registrar receives emails from anxious students every term and strives to provide all the help we can. Many of the issues we hear about can be helped by starting the registration process sooner. These are our top three reasons why you should consider registering early for the upcoming term.

  1. You will have an easier time choosing classes.
  2. You will have time to make alternate plans.

Have you ever searched the Term Guide only to find all your preferred courses are already full? Popular or required courses can fill up quickly, so you will have a better chance of getting a seat if you register early. Registering early also helps if you are on the section waitlist for a course because there is more time for a seat to open as other students adjust their registrations.

If the course you want to take is full, starting the registration process sooner will give you plenty of time to work with your mentor to make alternate arrangements like a Just in Time Study or a Totally Individualized Study. It will provide you with time to think of alternate courses that will meet your needs that you may not have considered taking in the upcoming term.

  1. You will have time to organize payment.

Registering earlier in the weeks before the term starts will allow you to get your payment in place. Are you using financial aid? A payment plan? Use this extra time to ensure everything is in place to avoid cancellation for non-payment after the first week of the term. Do you receive tuition benefits from your place of employment or another organization? Registering in the weeks before the term starts will give you the time you need to submit your tuition vouchers or obtain enrollment verification letters that may be required to receive that benefit. You can’t control how quickly paperwork will be processed or if any issues will arise, but you can give yourself extra time to make sure everything is all set before the term begins.

Registering for the upcoming term will always be a bit stressful but registering as soon as possible will help. If you have any questions or need assistance with your registration, contact the Office of the Registrar at RegistrarsOffice@esc.edu.
