Welcome!

by Joshua Boardman, Basic Needs Coordinator

November is the time of the year when people start thinking about the shorter daylight hours, preparation for special time with friends and family, and the magic of the holiday season. These activities bring excitement for many. For others, this time of year brings anxiety and fear of not being able to provide basic necessities for themselves or their families. This anxiety and fear can carry on throughout the year.

SUNY Empire recognizes that many of our students struggle with basic needs and, in response, SUNY Empire hired me as basic needs coordinator in spring 2020. My role is to assist students who need assistance finding or accessing resources to resolve such issues as food insecurity, housing insecurity, or homelessness. I am based in the New York City region and work with students directly to reduce the burden that so many students face.

In addition, my colleagues in the Office of Student Life are available to help students statewide access basic-needs resources. For you need some help, but aren’t ready to reach out yet, please review the resources we’ve compiled.

Many basic needs issues have been enhanced by the COVID-19 pandemic as a result of lower pay or loss of income. We understand difficult decisions have to be made when you are struggling to keep a roof over your head or food on your tables, and we encourage you to reach out to basicneeds@esc.edu. We are here to help you focus on your studies – not where your next meal will come from.

Be well!
