Welcome! October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

by Kerianne Silver, Director of Student Life and Title IX Coordinator

Welcome to the October issue of the SUNY Empire State College Student Success Newsletter. While we normally open the newsletter on a positive note, October is Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Across the country, reports of domestic violence are increasing at an alarming rate. Experts attribute this to COVID-19-related social and economic pressures. Please know, that SUNY Empire is here to offer support, guidance, and resources to anyone in need.

Title IX may have started to ensure equality in sports at colleges and universities, but it has evolved considerably over the years. As SUNY Empire’s Title IX coordinator, I am responsible for responding to complaints of sexual discrimination and assault, and coordinating appropriate responses.

Many don’t realize I also work with students who are experiencing domestic/intimate partner violence. I provide resources to students in need, and assist with any academic concerns that may arise due to missed classes or assignments.

I encourage you to be good advocates and neighbors during these trying times. If you ever need help, please reach out to me at TitleIX@esc.edu or by phone at 1-800-847-3000 x 1009.

If you need help, but aren’t ready to talk, please consider contacting the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE or find resources by zip code.

Please reach out to me at any time with any questions or concerns you might have.

Sincerely,

Kerianne Silver

Director of Student Life and Title IX Coordinator
