Their pieces were among numerous submissions from students across the SUNY system. (Pictured left: Work by Claudia Rocha-van Holt demonstrates painting within a digital medium.)

Works range from innovative photographic processes to digital prints made at the Metropolitan Center digital media lab at Hudson Street. They show a range of aesthetic genres including documentary photography, abstract painting and painting within the digital medium, as demonstrated in the work of Claudia Rocha-van Holt. Especially encouraged to submit work were graduating seniors from 2011, as well as current students.

Metro students participating in the event include (mentors’ names follow in parentheses):

  • Steven P. Harris (Betty Wilde-Biasiny)
  • Cordell Price (BWB)
  • Sean Stefan Sampson (BWB)
  • Bridget Benson ESC '11 (Raul Manzano)
  • Dennis Lee ESC '11 (RM)
  • Leah Kozak ESC '11 (BWB)
  • Claudia Rocha-van Holt (BWB)
  • William Saunders (BWB)
  • Melissa Stanley (BWB)
  • Irene Villasenor (Ruth Goldberg)

“The opportunity to send Empire State College students as ambassadors of our school and visual art program is a huge incentive for students to achieve and succeed in the art world,” says Associate Professor Betty Wilde-Biasiny, a mentor at Metro.

This competition for awards and monetary prizes includes the first round of student work selected by mentors at the college, carefully curated, professionally matted and framed--mostly by the students--then shipped to the site. Last year, SUNY Empire State College garnered one $500 honorable mention and resulted in invitations to two students to participate in the Albany State Museum Best of SUNY show.
