"American Popular Music of the 20th Century," a 4-credit course that is being offered for the first time this spring, is the result of a nearly year-long collaboration between the Center for Distance Learning (CDL) and the Office of Integrated Technologies (OIT). This initiative began when Lisa Snyder, working with the CDL Mobile Learning Task Force, approached OIT’s Academic Technologies (AT) group with a proposal to create a non-linear, student-centered, mobile-accessible course.

This collaborative effort is an experiment in mobile learning and open-course design. The open format of the course allows students flexibility in choosing their own path for exploring essential questions pertaining to American music. Students can work through the course either thematically or chronologically and will take part in interactive discussions, create and exchange music playlists and engage in a deep study of content based on their own interests.

All course content and activities can be accessed via a mobile environment created by the AT Learning Environments group and designed specifically for this project. Throughout the creation of "American Popular Music," the team encountered obstacles and experienced breakthroughs. Lessons learned will be documented and shared in a report with recommendations for the college’s next steps in the development of an institutional mobile learning strategy.

The course is fully enrolled for the spring 2012 term, with Mitch Wood as the instructor. For more information, contact Lisa Snyder at Lisa.Snyder@esc.edu or Mitch Wood at Mitchell.Wood@esc.edu.
