Phil OrtizCDL faculty mentor and area coordinator in science, mathematics and technology Dr. Phil Ortiz, at left, served as a judge of student presentations at the 2011 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS).

“The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students, which I've been involved with for more than 10 years in a number of roles, draws highly skilled and dedicated students from all over the United States,” Ortiz said. “It is an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to work closely with faculty mentors to hone their scientific insights and skills. Many of the students who attend will go on to pursue careers in the biomedical sciences, and later make significant contributions to their fields. Participating in this meeting is one of the highlights of my year, as it affords me the opportunity to interact with these students on site, as well as build relationships that continue well after the meeting has ended.”

Ortiz is a past recipient of the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Faculty Excellence. He is highly regarded for his work in the science area. In 1995, he received the Society for Achievement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science Award for Outstanding Mentor at an Undergraduate Institution. In 2001, he was presented with the President’s Award for Service to the Skidmore College community. He also has served the college as faculty senator and was the chairman of the Special Committee for Diversity and Cultural Competence. Oritz has worked diligently to recruit and retain minority students with science, math and technology academic interests.

As the largest professional event of its kind in the nation, ABRCMS is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, including mathematics, and provides faculty with resources for facilitating these students’ success.
