Student Activity Fee Referendum Approved; ESC is Lowest, Best Value in SUNY

The recent Student Activity Fee (SAF) referendum has been approved. According to the policy of the SUNY Board of Trustees, a referendum must be held every two years to determine if the Student Activity Fee shall be a mandatory or voluntary fee. The referendum was approved by a vote of 2 to 1 to keep the fee mandatory.

Thanks to the many students who voted to keep the fee mandatory. The current fee is $25 per term, the lowest and best value in SUNY. Most other SUNY students pay as much as $150 per term.

So what does this mean? Considering the list below, $25 goes a long way. The SAF funds many activities, including:

  • The online “Student Connection” newsletter
  • Graduation receptions
  • The Student Academic Conference
  • Career and Optimal Resume services online
  • Student Affairs Committee
  • Art competition
  • Clubs and organizations
  • Academic lectures
  • Cultural and social activities
  • Student governance activities
  • Annual Art Show reception

A student representative from each center serves on the Student Activity Fund committee. The committee meets in the spring each year to review proposals from SUNY Empire State College alumni student associations and programs around the state. This year the SAF committee will meet on Saturday, April 9 in Saratoga Springs.
