During the May 2011 term, at the behest of my writing professor, Mindy Kronenberg, I set out to secure an internship position. Although I always had believed that I would be hired from within an organization through interning and was thrilled at the prospect, the thought of marketing my professional and educational credentials after 17 years was daunting.

I began my search for a position by accessing OptimalResume.com through the college’s website. OptimalResume is a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate career-management site available to SUNY Empire State College students and alumni. Users can build resumes and cover letters and manage them in portfolios, create skills assessments and conduct practice interviews. They also can share their credentials on a professional website and across social-networking sites.

Through OptimalResume’s skills inventory I was able to identify my marketable skills and abilities, as well as match them to specific occupational accomplishments relevant to my new field of interest. A “live” mock interview that included questions and a response format of my choosing further prepared me and built my confidence.

I was delightfully surprised to find an intern/entry level resume-building template amid the site’s many offerings that allowed me to identify myself clearly as a student seeking an internship position and to feature SUNY Empire State College as my school. It also presented me with examples and suggested action verbs to help me construct each category of my resume: objective statement, key skills, education, selected coursework, honors and awards and activities/involvement. The same comprehensive resources and step-by-step assistance were available to enable me to construct my cover letter.

Confident that I had produced well-constructed, sophisticated and relevant career-search documents utilizing the very latest techniques and strategies available, I forwarded them to many local businesses, newspapers, magazines and radio stations, leaving the critical task of making that all-important “first impression” in the hands of those documents.

Through them, I successfully secured several interviews, offers and, ultimately, an exceptionally rewarding internship position writing weekly articles for a Long Island news and information website in a very demanding economic environment—a clear demonstration that SUNY Empire State College students have access to some of the finest, most up-to-date tools and online resources available anywhere!
