Today we celebrate publishing the 100th issue of Empire State College’s student run newsletter! In 2011 The Student Connection kicked off its very first issue, overseen by former editor Danielle Clum, then an undergraduate student pursing a degree in English with a passion for the editorial field.
Clum introduced us to student-related information about new college residencies, Talk One2One services for students, workshops and student resources. She really made students the focus of the newsletter and strived to provide pertinent information through articles and newsworthy sources. It was exactly what Empire State College needed to supplement all the great resources available through the college website, mentors and faculty. Clum graduated in 2012 and moved out of her role as a student and into her next adventure and career. Although I didn’t have the opportunity to meet Clum, I am impressed with and appreciative of the effort she made in helping to build The Student Connection.
In 2012, Sandara Barkevich stepped in to carry on the role of editor. Barkevich brought great enthusiasm to the newsletter with committed on-staff writers and new categories of content to give students a combination of journalistic news as well as social news and creative pieces. Barkevich also brought a strong editorial background honed through her own editing business and contributed to what has evolved into the outstanding student newsletter we have today.
Barkevich completed her B.S. in 2013 and continued on at Empire State College to complete her M.A.in 2016 and now works for the college’s Office of the President.
I have accomplished so much in a short time since I began my journey at Empire State College. I am very excited and honored that I can be a part of celebrating this great achievement of publishing 100 issues and thrilled to be part of such an amazing educational institution. Here’s to the next 100!
