The Leadership Institute at SUNY Empire State College is a selective and challenging year-long program that will build on existing leadership skills and propel students to the next stage of development. It is based on the social change model of leadership, which enables students to explore their own skills, work in a group setting and commit to a social action project.
Only a select group of students will be chosen to participate in this comprehensive program. The institute requires a one-year commitment beginning in the fall 1 2016 term that includes three in-person weekend meetings at the Student Academic Conference in the fall, a leadership residency in the winter and the Student Wellness Retreat in the spring; attendance at several online leadership development workshops and seminars; monthly telephone meetings with your leadership coach; an individual volunteer commitment; a social action group project; and a presentation to next year’s leadership class at its first meeting.
The Leadership Institute is free for all students accepted into the program. It includes all hotel fees for the Student Academic Conference, the winter residency and the Student Wellness Retreat. Applications are sought from students who want to engage in personal growth and are willing to make a social commitment. To be considered, you must be a matriculated student of SUNY Empire State College, have a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA and have completed at least one term with the college before the fall 1 2016 term.
There are countless benefits for students who make a commitment to completing the Leadership Institute, including experience in self-assessment, conflict resolution, public speaking, problem-solving skills, ethics and more. These resume building skills will provide valuable experience to help you move forward in your education and professional career. Overall, this program will help build self–confidence, which leads to improved emotional well-being. Therefore, your long-range health will be positively affected, greatly adding to the extensive and important benefits that the SUNY Empire State College Leadership Institute offers.
To apply, submit the completed application, along with one letter of reference and an essay.
