February 16, 2017
The Service Award was created to recognize and honor the students that selflessly commit their time to improving their college environment, community, and the wellbeing of other people. These service efforts can range from involvement in a student organization to participation in community service. Patricia Myers, the director of Collegewide Student Affairs, states, “The Service Award recognizes those students who have participated in worthy causes in addition to managing their busy lives. Empire State College students are often the backbone of their communities because of their involvement as academic achievers, volunteers, employees and family members.”
Last year we honored 11 incredible individuals who each embodied passion, commitment to service, and dedication to their local communities. The awardees were; Shurlene Aberdeen from our Long Island location, Marlea Andolora from our Genesee Valley location, Daniel DeBrucker from our Central New York location, Selwyn Ellis from our Hudson Valley location, Craig Henry from our Genesee Valley location, Polly Karis from our School for Graduate Studies, Alexander Lane from our Niagara Frontier location, Suzanne Lazar from our Northeast Center location, Lori Mould from our School for Graduate studies, Hope Stranger from our Hudson Valley location, and Ellen Terry from our Center for Distance Learning. These individuals have worked with populations such as homeless youth, refugees, United Auto Workers Civil and Human Rights Committee, and Association for Holistic Health just to name a few. They have devoted their time and energy for a variety of causes, and continue to make an impact in their community and college.
This year, we are seeking more individuals to honor their commitment to service in the 2016-2017 academic year. The Office of Collegewide Student Services will be recognizing 20 students and presenting this award at the Student Wellness Retreat on April 6 - 8 in Albany, New York. Students can be nominated by someone within the service group, a fellow student, an alumnus or alumna, college staff, mentor, or one can apply without a nomination.
Each individual must submit an application and two letters of recommendation by March 8 in order to be considered for the award. Students who are selected to receive the award will also receive a travel grant to assist them so they can attend the Student Wellness Retreat!
