SUNY Empire State College Library References Expand to Pilot Personal Librarian Service for BM&E Students
By Suzanne Lazar ’16, graduate student, SUNY Empire State College
February 16, 2017
Sarah Morehouse librarian at SUNY Empire, will pilot a new service for Business, Management and Economic students (both undergraduate and graduate level) - a personal librarian. This is an expansion on the library’s regular reference service that will allow BM&E learners with more complicated or in-depth questions to set up a live video and screen sharing appointment. There will be regular hours, and flexible hours to accommodate students and their schedules.
In addition to virtual appointments with students via video conferencing, the Personal Librarian program will allow a librarian to develop and individual connection with BM&E learners. This allows the librarian to track their progress and provide appropriate, customized support across multiple assignments and courses. Learners who are personally acquainted with their own librarian may feel less pressure and gain a better understanding of the assignment and course related material.
While all the librarians answer reference questions, each has their own area of interest and specialization. The BM&E personal librarian, Sarah Morehouse, has been focusing on BM&E and developing expertise in that area for 10 years. This experience is advantageous in assisting student with by using some of the unique and eccentric information for that area of study.
